He shouldn't smile, it's not a funny topic of conversation, but even so he can't seem to help himself. People like them, he thinks they need to find humour where they can, especially when their lives have been threatened so often, when they've consistently hurt and told they just have to go back for more. Without humour, that can all leads to some very dark places.

And John has been there. He has no intention of going back.

"And yet they do," he says. "Then the question becomes whether things like that are coming from your enemies or the people you work for. They're not often all that different, are they?"
