He shouldn't smile, it's not a funny topic of conversation, but even so he can't seem to help himself. People like them, he thinks they need to find humour where they can, especially when their lives have been threatened so often, when they've consistently hurt and told they just have to go back for more. Without humour, that can all leads to some very dark places.
