"Was there a showdown?" she asked, partially because his wording amused her and partially because she wasn't going to just agree to go with him and spill her guts in whatever fashion he was going to ask of her.

Her skills went far beyond just defending herself and he could clearly see that, but she'd always played them down for various reasons and didn't see any reason to stop now.
